How – To: Get Your Home Ready to Sell

Getting ready to sell your home? Here is everything you need to know!

Getting your home ready to sell can be a daunting task, so we’re here to help. Follow our how-to guide to get your home picture perfect!

1. Do Your Research

Hop onto any one of the many platforms to see what the housing market looks like in your area. Pay attention to things like square footage, yard size, number of bedrooms, special features/upgrades, etc. See how your home compares to those around you to get an idea of what your home may be able to sell for. Your listing agent will also be able to help you figure out what your home is worth.

2. Declutter

This is a big step into getting your home ready to sell. By decluttering, potential buyers will be focused on the house itself, rather than the everyday clutter that we all know so well. So pick up your closets, pantry, counter tops and shelves. This is also a great time to start going through your stuff and deciding what to keep and what to get rid of! The less stuff you have, the less you have to pack later on!

3. Clean!

When you’ve walked through as many homes as we have, cleaning your home prior to showings makes all the difference. Buyers don’t want to move into a home that looks like it wasn’t taken care of, so get out the dusting spray and mop and get to work. I promise it’ll be worth all of the extra elbow grease when potential buyers walk into a shiny, lavender fresh home!

4. Paint/Handyman

Maybe you are selling a newer home or one that has been remodeled, so you might be able to skip right past this step! If not, take a look around. Maybe there’s that one wall that has crayon all over it (if you have kids, you get it) a squeaky door or loose pipe that you have put on the back burner. Now is the time to get those small items fixed! A little can go a long way and you don’t want buyers focusing on small imperfections rather than looking at the home as a whole.

5. Staging?

Staging is huge when it comes to selling your home. Most buyers start their home search online, which means if your home doesn’t show well in the pictures, they might scroll right past and miss out on a perfectly great home. We don’t want that. So dig around to find those matching pillow cases, get out some flower vases and add a little pizzazz into your home to get it picture perfect! (This is again where decluttering plays a huge role).

Maybe you need a little more than a couple of pillows. That’s ok! We offer free staging when you list your home with the Rhae Group, so that gives you one less thing to stress about.

6. Remove Personal Items

This isn’t necessarily a must, but it’s a good thing to think about. Remove some of those family photos from the wall, pack up any nice jewelry, photo albums, things like that. Find that balance of making your home look warm and inviting, while still allowing buyers to see the home as their own! This is something that we recommend to all of our sellers.

Do you feel ready? I know it seems like a lot to do to prepare, but most of these items can be done in a long weekend and will go a long way in presenting your beautiful home to potential buyers. Create a checklist, slowly start making your way through it and you’ll be ready to no time!
